Personal Story

Virginia Improves Care for Neglected and Abused Military Children
By Virginia Department of Social Services, Division of Family Services
The Commonwealth of Virginia has a special relationship with our military community. During the 2017 General Assembly session, we further strengthened the support we provide to our military families through the unanimous passage of HB 2279 and SB 1164. Sponsored by more than 30 legislators, these identical pieces of legislation ensured coordination of the resources available to our military families who may be experiencing challenges in raising their children.

We are excited about our partnership and our ability provide this support to our military families.

The Department of Social Services works closely with military families when concerns are raised about the care parents and caregivers are providing to their children. However, this work generally occurs only after the Department of Social Services receives a valid complaint of abuse and/or neglect. Now, with the passage of these pieces of legislation, the Department of Social Services and the Family Advocacy Programs of the United States Armed Forces can share information and ensure appropriate services are provided to our military families as early as possible, and not have to wait until abuse and/or neglect have occurred.

We are excited about our partnership and our ability to provide this support to our military families who sacrifice so much each and every day in service to our great nation.
