Maine joined the Audiology and Speech Language Pathology Compact on June 26, 2023 when Gov. Janet Mills signed the bill into law. Maine became the 29th state to join the compact.

Governor Janet Mills signed LD 2137 into law on April 22, 2023 making Maine the 7th state to join the Dentist and Dental Hygienist Compact.

Maine became the seventh state to enact the Interstate Counseling Compact after Governor Janet Mills signed Chapter 547 of the laws of 2022, sponsored by Representative Joyce “Jay” McCreight.

Maine joins the enhanced Nurse Licensure Compact.

In 2021, Maine joined the Occupational Therapy Licensure Compact.

Gov. Janet Mills signed the Physical Therapy Licensure Compact into law on June 26, 2023. The compact facilitates interstate practice of physical therapy with the goal of improving public access to physical therapy services.

Governor Mills allowed the Physician Assistant Licensure Compact to become law without signature on April 23, 2024, making Maine the 9th state to enact the policy.

Maine became the twenty-fifth state to enact PsyPACT in 2021.

Governor Mills signed the Social Work Licensure Compact on April 26, 2024; it became Chapter 624 of Public Law.

Pursuant to Title 20-A §5001-A of the Maine Revised Statutes there is no set timeline for a parent or guardian to meet homeschool requirements. The Maine Revised Statutes state: written notice shall be provided to the school administrative unit with the name, address, date home instruction is set to begin, and assurance that indicates 175 days annually of instruction will be provided. Pursuant to Title 20-A §5021 of the Maine Revised Statues, students receiving home-school instruction are eligible to participate in cocurricular activities sponsored by the local school unit as well as extracurricular activities sponsored by the local school unit, so long as the home-school students meet the same eligibility standards as regularly enrolled students. Additionally, home-school students are eligible to use school facilities and equipment; receive special education services as provided under federal regulations; and use school textbooks and library books.

Pursuant to Chapter 101 of the Maine Unified Special Education Regulation Birth to Age 20 (MUSER) the State Educational Agency must ensure a 30-calendar-day resolution period is met, a final decision is reached in the hearing; and a copy of the decision is mailed to the parents.

According to Defense Department sponsored research, Maine has been identified as one of fourteen states with existing Advanced Enrollment policies that facilitate the effective implementation of procedures designed to streamline enrollment for military-connected children. Title 20-A of the Maine Revised Statues, Sub Section 5205 specifies documentation needed in enrollment, identifies enrollment opportunities for specific schools and programs, and addresses residency questions.

The Maine Department of Education's Data Warehouse provides data about Maine’s students, education staff, schools and School Administrative Units (SAUs) in one location. This data can be filtered in multiple ways, to include Military Affiliation Data.

Maine adopted the Interstate Compact on Educational Opportunity for Military Children in June 2009. The purpose of the Interstate Compact, also known as MIC3 (Military Interstate Children’s Compact Commission) is to ensure educational equity for military dependent children despite issues of transiency and deployment that clearly impact these student’s academic, social, and emotional needs. As part of this initiative, Maine DOE created a landing page for military families which outlines the intent of the Compact as well as other non-state specific resources.

Chapter 90 of Public Law 2025 explicitly allows judicial notice to be taken regarding Military Protective Orders in proceedings related to Temporary Orders of Protection. In determining whether good cause exists to grant a Temporary Order of Protection, the court may consider the existence of an active military protective order.
