Respiratory Care Interstate Compact Final Legislation
The Respiratory Care Interstate Compact (RCIC) is an interstate agreement designed to streamline the process for licensed respiratory therapists to practice in multiple member states. Currently, approximately 130,000 respiratory therapists in the U.S. face significant challenges when seeking to provide services across state lines. RCIC aims to reduce unnecessary licensure burdens, improve public safety through enhanced information sharing, and facilitate multistate practice.
RCIC is particularly beneficial for military spouses who are respiratory therapists, as it supports relocating military families by reducing the barriers to employment caused by frequent moves. This increased job portability allows military spouses to maintain their professional careers and contribute to their family's financial stability. Furthermore, the compact benefits state licensing authorities by reducing administrative burdens. States benefit through workforce development, preparedness for health emergencies, and preservation of sovereignty.
