Key Message

Separating Service members leave the military with documented training and experience that can prepare them for civilian employment; however, this documentation is not always used by state entities to provide them academic credit. Academic institutions provide an important bridge that can fill in gaps separating Service members may need to translate their training and experience into recognized qualifications for professional and technical occupations.

Summary

Separating Service members are frequently delayed getting post-Service employment even though they have applicable military training and experience which can provide them potential academic credit toward degree requirements.

Statistic

By not receiving credit, separating Service members may be held back from finding employment or finishing a degree. States can establish policies that ensure separating Service members do not have to repeat requirements completed during their military career to obtain academic credit or an occupational license.
